INITIAL SITUATION AND OBJECTIVES
Strengthening, in the long term, the climate-protection measures related to nutrition that are already underway.
To date, the Canton of Zurich has focused on two initiatives to promote climate-friendly nutrition as part of its action plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (2018). These initiatives involve the use of educational materials and efforts to improve the climate-friendliness of food offerings within the Canton of Zurich’s catering and dining facilities. Given the significant potential for a positive sustainability impact, the Canton intends to intensify its work in this area.
OUR SOLUTION
First the mission statement, then the measures – both developed through a participatory approach.
In close collaboration with the team at Econcept AG (Zurich), a mission statement was first developed within the public authorities, outlining the values and goals of the Canton of Zurich regarding this topic. This foundational work serves to establish a common basis for the measures to be implemented in the coming years. Building on this, the development of the measures was carried out through a process involving two virtual workshops, in which a wide range of relevant stakeholders participated.
- Professional guidance for the development of the mission statement
- Engagement of the stakeholder network
- Co-design and facilitation of virtual workshops
- Evaluation of the workshops and conceptual development of measures
IMPACT & RESULTS
Broadly supported mission statement, spanning two pages. Four concrete measures currently being implemented.
The guiding principles and the measures were adopted by the Zurich Cantonal Council on 5 October 2022.
