StreamUp – The Funding Program by UAW

THE STARTING POINT

From by-product stream to main idea

In Switzerland, approximately 2.8 million tons of avoidable food loss occur annually. At the same time, large quantities of by-product streams are generated during processing – valuable resources that have hardly been utilized until now.

With StreamUp, the broad network of United Against Waste is to be specifically utilized to promote, connect, and scale effective Food Save solutions. The combination of practical industry expertise, scientific support, and a strong network creates ideal conditions to successfully bring innovative ideas for reducing food waste to market.

THE PROJECT

The StreamUp Mentoring Program is created

StreamUp was developed and launched by Foodways as part of United Against Waste. The program is the first Swiss funding and mentoring format that specifically supports innovations for the reduction of food loss.

Over several months, selected teams from start-ups, established companies, and research institutions further develop their ideas – supported by experts from the fields of product development, sustainability, marketing, and financing.

The program includes:

  • Workshops and individual mentoring sessions
  • Networking events and speed dates to connect partners and resources
  • Scientific support to measure impact through a university
  • A platform for solution ideas, especially at the StreamUp Market, which takes place as part of the Focus Food Save impulse event
  • Communication and promotion of solution ideas within the UAW network

With StreamUp, Foodways strengthens innovation in the Swiss Food Save ecosystem and builds a bridge between ideas and impact – for a circular and enjoyable future of our food.

IMPACT & RESULTS

First edition was successful

Already in its first year, 11 mentors from the food, sustainability, and start-up scene supported 11 promising projects – from plant-based protein solutions to fermentation technologies and digital tools for residual value recovery.

Several of the participating teams were able to strengthen their market position, build partnerships, or attract investors through StreamUp. The secured financing of the program lays the foundation for StreamUp to be established as a permanent funding instrument in the Swiss innovation ecosystem – and thus to foster new Food Save ideas in the future.

Following its successful launch, StreamUp will be held again in 2026. Interested start-ups, companies, or research teams developing innovative solutions for reducing food loss can apply for the next program round.
