INITIAL SITUATION AND OBJECTIVES
Review the draft “Strategy for a Sustainable Food System in Basel-Stadt 2030” through a participatory process
With the 2018–2021 package of measures, the Governing Council strengthened its commitment to sustainable food systems in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. The eleven measures focused on three objectives: strengthening regional food supply and value creation, and promoting a diverse, healthy, fair, and environmentally responsible food system. Against this backdrop, the city and cantonal administration is developing a new “Sustainable Food System Strategy for Basel-Stadt 2030,” which builds upon the previous package of measures and enjoys broad support from local stakeholders.
OUR SOLUTION
Gathering input and validation from stakeholders in business, academia, and civil society
In close collaboration with the project team from the Canton of Basel-Stadt, we designed a process to engage and involve key stakeholders in the strategy-development phase through two workshops. We worked as partners throughout the entire process—from the initial outreach to the stakeholders, to the design and execution of the workshops.
In addition, Foodways provided substantive sparring and input at key moments throughout the process to help develop the content of the strategy—most notably at the outset and following the first stakeholder workshop.
Foodways’ services include:
- Identification and expansion of the list of stakeholders from the hospitality, retail, processing, public administration, and civil society sectors
- Outreach and communication with stakeholders on behalf of the municipal and cantonal authorities
- Planning, implementation, facilitation, and documentation of two workshops (held both in-person and virtually) with over 70 and 50 participants, respectively
- Conceptual development of a strategy document and action plan based on input gathered during the workshops
- Provision of strategic feedback and expert input to the project team within the municipal and cantonal administration
IMPACT & RESULTS
The strategy has received the support of stakeholders and is ready to be presented to further authorities.
The strategy document was successfully developed under the guidance of a project team comprising representatives from the city and cantonal administrations. A key factor in this success was the effective implementation of the stakeholder engagement process, as evidenced by the following measurable results:
- High number of participants (70 at the first workshop and 50 at the second), high level of engagement
- Diverse (food-related) expertise among the participants, spanning all relevant segments
- Strong support among the participants for the strategic direction
